Do you know what this is?

It’s a crayon roll made by Shelbyville local Rebekah Stewart!
They are THE most awesome little things! They are cute, well made, and just a great idea for someone with kids on the go.
Rebekah is a mom of two and every time she walks in my front door with her new items for the shop I get excited because she looks at HER needs as a mom and creates truly useful, kid-friendly (probably because they are thoroughly kid tested) items that are realized in really fantastic fabrics.
This is part of what makes my focus on handmade items such a joy. I never know what is going to walk through my front door and, while I’d be lying if I said it all made me squee, I can say that my wonder and amazement is engaged MUCH more frequently than not.
Crayon rolls. I could NEVER have come up with this idea and now that I know someone HAS? I want to give one to everyone I know that has a kid.

When you walk off of Main Street through the screen door of McKinley’s, the homey atmosphere is immediately apparent. Everything from the handwritten menu to the toy train running around the whole restaurant says small town deli.
When trying McKinley’s for the first time, I couldn’t help but to order their namesake sandwich, The McKinley. It is a turkey sandwich served on your choice of bread (I had rye) with a delicious and creamy walnut mayo dressing, sliced celery, sweet apple slices and lettuce. This signature sandwich is served with a pickle spear and chips. With a water to drink, my whole lunch cost under $7.
(This image is of their also yummy, reuben)

McKinley’s Bread Shop & Deli is a must stop for lunch when you are visiting Historic Downtown Shelbyville.

The McKinley is my UTTER weakness when it comes to McKinley’s! I always promise myself I will order something new, EVERYTHING I’ve eaten there has been delicious, but it’s hard to resist the tasty, tasty draw of the classic McKinley!
The late winter/early spring is a challenging time of year for most small business owners, especially MICRO-business owners like so many of us are in downtown Shelbyville. We walk the fine line between creative thinking and desperation as the heat bills rise and our income drops.
On the up-side, this time of year finds me re-thinking and re-visioning what I’m doing over here in my wee shop. I do a lot of planning, rearranging, and mulling over what the next big change/idea/improvement is going to be. It may take me 3 months to implement, but the deep dark teatime of the soul that is February in Kentucky sure does give one time to consider.
And finding new ways to do more with less is part of that process.
As many of you already know, I just moved my home. I’m now much closer to the shop (a huge YAY) and we’re also outfitting a home for ourselves AND my father so we’ve had a lot more space to fill and a few needs we didn’t have in the old house. (Side note: I’d like to give a small shout-out to both The Ruby Rooster, Making Ends Meet, and The Gardner House who helped us with beautiful pieces for the house at fantastic prices).
Hunting for the “right” furniture led us to The Auction Barn, a weekly auction in Eminence. We walked in hoping for a dresser, a few chairs, maybe a hall table or even a settee. Strolling the perimeter of the auction room, however, I saw IT.
I didn’t really need IT but I knew, immediately, that I had to have IT.
IT: the vintage bulk seed rack sitting on the far side of the room. My shop NEEDED this rack.
So we waited. And waited. And waited some more. We watched tiny things go for high prices and large pieces of furniture go for a song. We watched people leave and new people come in. We watched the auction help lift HUGE pieces up for people to see, sometimes seemingly defying the laws of physics as they did so.
Finally, my rack was on the block.
I would like to say it was an exciting bidding war, but the truth was that only one other person had any interest and not TOO much interest, at that. I was able to take my HAD TO HAVE seed rack home to the shop for, well, not a SONG, but pretty darn close to it.

The HAD TO HAVE IT
And you know what? It really has made a difference. People come into the shop and comment on it, the rack has received a lot of compliments and changed the space. It isn’t a big thing but this rack has been the catalyst for movement in the shop: re-arranging, re-thinking, re-visioning.
As the days get longer and warmer and we aren’t quite as needful as we are in February, I hope to look at my rack and remember that winter will come again and it’s important to always be thinking of the unexpected, creative ways we can do more with less.

Kelley Oakleaf as "CJ Sprinkles"
Perhaps you’ve noticed the adorable dancing ice cream cone outside of CJ’s Candies lately. The cone (CJ Sprinkles, as we call it) is to let people know that CJ’s now carries hand dipped, Kentucky proud, Valentine’s ice cream. We also still carry Graeter’s pre-packaged ice cream. We absolutely love it when our friends and neighbors volunteer (payment is an ice cream cone) to be CJ Sprinkles for a short time!
So if you see an ice cream cone hanging around in front of CJ’s Candies; honk, wave or better yet just stop in for an ice cream treat!!!

Hey friends! It’s Elizabeth here, over at Lizzie Loo Photography. Wanted to post this for a great friend of mine, Sam Grey. He will be leading a photowalk in our town as part of the World Wide Photowalk this Saturday. A note from him is below!! I think it would be SUPERB if you would attend – even if you’re just the tiniest bit interested in photography – it will be a great time!!
On July 24, 2010 the 3rd annual Worldwide Photo Walk will take place. I have signed up Shelbyville as one of the over 1000 cities worldwide to participate in this event. I would like to invite each of you to join me on the 24th at 1:45 PM with your cameras in hand to see what kind of photos you can come up with as we walk a planned route in the downtown area of Shelbyville. This is a free event and a chance to meet others with the same interest in photography and our downtown area. You can find more on the walk and sign up (pre-registration is required) at www.worldwidephotowalk.com .
And since no post is complete without a picture, enjoy this of my sister showing our horse, Dragon. It’s almost horse show time – hope you’re ready for tons of fun!!
